Encryption Types - SFTP
Secure FTP
SFTP is not FTP, it is a program that can be run through a Secure Shell connection
(SSH).In a SSH connection
all operations are performed in an encrypted manner utilizing public key authentication
and compression. SFTP is an interactive file transfer program, similar to FTP.
It connects and logs into a specified host, then enters an
interactive command mode lust like FTP. The difference is that SFTP can only be used on an
SSH connection. A Secure Shell connection (SSH) gives the user more power than an FTP
connection. SFTP is just one of many programs on a server that can be run through a SSH
connection. Typically SSH is used by IT personnel to administrate a server. Copying and downloading
files is only one of the many things they need to do and SFTP provides them a way of doing just that.
