What is FTP?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the simplest and safest way to transfer files over the Internet. Whether you know it or not you most likely have used FTP before. The most common use of FTP is for downloading files from the Internet. FTP's ability to transfer files makes FTP an essential part of the internet.

When you download a file from the Internet you're actually transferring the file to your computer from another system. You may not know where that other system is physically, but you most likely know it's address or URL.

An FTP address looks like a web address except it uses the prefix ftp:// instead of http://. A computer with an FTP address to receive an FTP connection is referred to as an FTP server or FTP site.
